MSE 450 / 510 – Introduction to Materials Characterization
Spring 2016

This course will study the key microscopy and spectroscopy methods used to characterize the structure and composition of materials. The underlying principles, advantages and disadvantages, and applications of each technique will be studied. The characterization techniques to be covered include optical and electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, x-ray and electron diffraction and spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, and ion beam spectroscopy.

MSE 523 – Structure and Mechanical Properties of Materials
Fall 2014, Fall 2015, Fall 2016

This core graduate course aims to link the structure of materials (including crystal structure and defect structure) with their properties. Students will learn basic concepts in symmetry, crystal structure, diffraction, crystal imperfections, tensors, tensor properties of materials, and mechanical behaviours such as elasticity, fracture, and creep.
