About the Lab

Our research focuses on human neuromuscular control, physical human-robot interaction, and robot-aided neurorehabilitation

The main goals of our research are to:

This research draws upon diverse disciplines, including system dynamics and controls, robotics, mechanical design, biomechanics, and neuroscience. The lab is under the direction of Dr. Hyunglae Lee, and is part of the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy (SEMTE) at ASU.

July 2022 - Hyunglae Lee is serving as a Regional Co-Chair for the 20th International Conference on Ubiquitous Robots (UR 2023). NEW!

June 2022 - Our paper titled "Multi-DoF Soft Robotic Ankle-Foot Orthosis (SR-AFO) for Gait Assistance and Variable Ankle Support" has been accepted for publication in Wearable Technologies. 

April 2022 - Our paper titled "Deep Learning: Predicting Environments from Short-time Observations of Postural Balance" has been accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering (TBME)

April 2022 - Our paper titled "Influence of Task Complexity on Movement Planning and Release after Stroke: Insights from StartReact" has been accepted for publication in Experimental Brain Research (EBR)

March 2022 - Our paper titled "Entrainment during Human Locomotion Using a Lightweight Soft Robotic Hip Exosuit (SR-HExo)" has been accepted for publication in IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L). 

February 2022 - Hyunglae Lee gives an invited talk at the Department of Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series at the George Washington University. 

February 2022 - Two papers have been accepted for the presentation at IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2022) that will take place in Philadelphia in May 2022 .

January 2022 - Our paper titled "User-adaptive variable damping control using Bayesian optimization to enhance physical human-robot interaction" has been accepted for publication in IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L).

July 2021 - Hyunglae Lee won the New Investigator Award from Arizona Department of Health Services. 

June 2021 - One paper has been accepted for the presentation at IEEE/RSJ International Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2021) that will take place in Prague, Czech Republic (Virtual) in September 2021

June 2021 - Hyunglae Lee received the 2021 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Prize Paper Award (2nd place)! 

May 2021 - Hyunglae Lee got tenured and promoted to Associate Professor! 

May 2021 - Hyunglae Lee receives The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering Top 5% Teaching Award! 

May 2021 - The team SR-HExo (Lily Baye-Wallace, Carly Thalman,and Hyunglae Lee) was selected as the 2nd place Winner of the Innovation Challenge in Wearable Robotics Association Conference (WearRAcon 2021). BIG CONGRATULATIONS! 

May 2020 - Lauren receives the Outstanding Honors Thesis Award! Congratulations!

May 2021 - Five abstracts have been accepted for the presentation at The 45th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Biomechanics (ASB 2021) that will take place in Atlanta (virtual) in August 2020.

April 2021 -  Our paper (in collaboration with Drs. Richmond (University of Florida), Fling (Colorado State University), and Peterson (ASU)) titled "The assessment of center of mass and center of pressure during quiet stance: current applications and future directions" has been accepted for publication in Journal of Biomechanics.
