He is a graduate faculty member of the Clean Energy Systems (CES) program and the Robotics &amp; Autonomous Systems (RAS) program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Zhao\u2019s research focuses on <strong>connected and automated vehicles<\/strong>, vehicle\u2013infrastructure cooperative perception, autonomous vehicle system integration and safety evaluation, motion planning and control, and <strong>AI and machine learning for intelligent transportation and robotics systems<\/strong>, with additional emphasis on <strong>electrified propulsion and battery management systems<\/strong>. His work aims to enable safe, scalable, and deployable intelligent vehicle technologies through system-level modeling, data-driven methods, and experimental validation. Before joining ASU, Dr. Zhao worked as a <strong>Senior Researcher at General Motors Research and Development<\/strong>, where his experience informs his academic research on advanced vehicle control, diagnostics, and automated driving systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Zhao currently serves as an <strong>Associate Editor for the IEEE Open Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems<\/strong> and <strong>ASME Letters in Dynamic Systems and Control. <\/strong>He has authored <strong>over 40 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications<\/strong> and is a co-inventor on <strong>15 U.S. patents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Zhao received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from <strong>The Ohio State University<\/strong> in 2015, where he was a recipient of the <strong>OSU Presidential Fellowship<\/strong>. He received his M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2004 and his M.S. degree in Automotive Engineering in 2002, both from Lawrence Technological University. He received his B.S.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1996 from LeTourneau University.
