{"id":124,"date":"2011-09-23T19:38:48","date_gmt":"2011-09-24T02:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/faculty.engineering.asu.edu\/mobasher\/?page_id=124"},"modified":"2023-05-24T11:48:53","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24T18:48:53","slug":"anti-algae-cement-systems","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/faculty.engineering.asu.edu\/mobasher\/blended-cement-systems\/anti-algae-cement-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Algae-Resistant Cements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-930feb06 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Algae are among the most abundant and prolific microorganisms found in water bodies in the regions with sufficient sunlight and nutrients (nitrates and phosphorous).&nbsp; Growth of algae is quite common in irrigation canals that transport water to utilities, making it difficult for the water utilities to provide drinking water that is un affected by algae and their byproducts.&nbsp; In addition to reduced flow rate in channels, algal growth results in the release of undesirable taste and odor compounds and bio-toxins into the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main potential areas of application for new cement composite systems involve the lining of canal surfaces where fixed-surface biocides are desirable to control biofouling. The germicidal effectiveness of various additives when blended within a microstructure of a cement based system were studied.
