Mike Ranjram

Assistant Professor
School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering

Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA (2021)
M.A.Sc., University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada (2015)
B.A.Sc., University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada (2013)

Dr. Ranjram’s main research interest is in making power electronics smaller, more efficient, and more capable, and in leveraging these improvements to enable the next generation of sustainable systems and devices. A current focus is on high-frequency power conversion, and on system- and component-level techniques for reducing the cost, volume, weight, and loss of power magnetic components, which today present a dominant bottleneck toward improved power conversion.

He has developed high performance power electronics in a wide range of applications, including 45W mobile phone chargers, 1kW data center supplies, 30kW battery energy storage systems, and MW-level high-voltage dc systems.

Dr. Ranjram is a recipient of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics Prize Paper Award and the ASU Top 5% Teaching Award. He authored the solutions manual for the 2nd edition of Principles of Power Electronics.

Graduate Students

Jacob Anderson

Graduate Research Associate (Ph.D.)

Jacob completed his BSE in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University in Dec. 2023. His current research interests are in miniaturized, high performance power electronics leveraging emerging widebandgap semiconductors, and in automated high frequency core loss testing platforms which serve that miniaturization.

Prior to joining as a doctoral student, Jacob was an active member of MAPEL as an undergraduate researcher and as a research aide.

Emmanuel Havugimana

Graduate Research Associate (Ph.D.)

Emmanuel completed his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His current research interests are in high frequency power magnetics and power electronics.

Before ASU, he worked as an Electrical Engineer at an electric mobility startup, Ampersand Ltd, in Kigali,  Rwanda

Nick Kirkby

Graduate Research Associate (Ph.D.)

Nick completed his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Nick’s current research focus is the measurement and characterization of core loss of low permeability magnetic materials, thermal considerations in these systems, and in modular power conversion.

Nick’s background is in software engineering for power electronics including motor controllers and power converters.

Htat “Ted” Min

Graduate Research Associate (Ph.D.)

Htat (Ted) has B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Northern Illinois University and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University, where he is currently pursuing a PhD.

Previously, he worked on power electronics of aerospace/defense power generation, distribution and controls at Raytheon Technologies Corporation. He now holds a Staff Electrical Engineer position at Northrop Grumman Corporation-Tactical Space Systems Division, located in Gilbert, AZ.

Sritharini Radhakrishnan

Graduate Research Associate (Ph.D.)

Sritharini earned her BSE in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Materials Science and Engineering from Arizona State University. Her current research centers around coupled electronic and magnetic systems.

Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, Sritharini worked at Intel and Sandia National Laboratories.

Ian Willows

Graduate Research Associate (Ph.D.)

Ian completed his BSE in Electrical Engineering at ASU Fall 2022. He joined MAPEL in Fall 2023 with interests in power electronics and electrical machinery. Ian is interested in both R&D and teaching after completion of his PhD.

Before joining the lab, Ian worked at a space and defense company designing hardware test benches and performing stress analysis on PCBs.

Michael Leef

Graduate Research Assistant (M.S.)

Michael completed his BSE in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University in December 2023. His current research interests are distributed energy resources and high frequency magnetic characterization.

Currently, he works as a distribution operations engineer at Arizona Public Service (APS) focusing on protection coordination and reliability.

Undergraduate Students

Daniel Graves

FURI Student

Daniel is pursuing his BSE in Electrical Engineering. His academic and professional interests lie in the realm of embedded systems, controls, and signal processing.

He works at Salt River Project (SRP) as a college intern, actively engaged in real time automation controller projects.

Tyson Klose

Undergraduate Researcher

Tyson is an undergraduate student completing his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University and will graduate in December of 2024. His interests include electrical machinery (electromechanical energy conversion) and power electronics.

After he completes his degree, he is interested in working in the renewable energy industry or EV industry.

Hunter Bridges

FURI Student

Hunter is pursuing a BSE in Electrical Engineering and will graduate in May of 2025 . His research interests currently include electromechanical energy conversion, power systems and power electronics.

He is currently interning for Kimley-Horn in a power systems role. After completing his undergraduate degree, he plans to pursue a career in Power Systems, Hardware design and or Power Electronics.
