{"id":2030,"date":"2020-12-30T18:11:47","date_gmt":"2020-12-31T01:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/faculty.engineering.asu.edu\/westerhoff\/?p=2030"},"modified":"2020-12-30T18:11:47","modified_gmt":"2020-12-31T01:11:47","slug":"congratulations-katie-pascavis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/faculty.engineering.asu.edu\/westerhoff\/2020\/12\/congratulations-katie-pascavis\/","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations Katie Pascavis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katie was part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xprize.org\/challenge\/nextgenmask\/articles\/xprize-next-gen-mask-winners\">team that won<\/a> $500,000 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xprize.org\/challenge\/nextgenmask\">XPRIZE Next-Gen Mask Challenge to redesign the face masks used to prevent the spread of COVID-19 <\/a>by making them more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fB3ipu29xHc&amp;feature=youtu.be\">comfortable, functional and affordable<\/a>. Her team was lead and organized by <a href=\"https:\/\/theluminositylab.com\/\">Luminosity Labs<\/a>. Here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/asunow.asu.edu\/20201222-creativity-asu-student-team-wins-international-mask-competition\">great story<\/a> about their team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katie is an undergraduate mechanical engineer who worked in our lab. The <a href=\"https:\/\/newtcenter.org\/\">NSF NEWT center<\/a> supported Katie as a freshman engineer and exposed her to research concepts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practiceofinnovation.com\/my-biography\/\">developing value propositions using the NABC approach<\/a>, and understanding the nature and importance of disinfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katie acknowledges graduate students (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mariana-lanzarini-lopes-834b7555\/\">Mariana Lopes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/naushita-sharma\/\">Naushita Sharma<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.engineering.asu.edu\/westerhoff\/person\/zhe-zhao\/\">Zhe Zhao<\/a>) NSF NEWT Center  in helping her creating research projects and experimental design, along with aiding her presentations and writing skills, which helped greatly for various stages of the X-Prize challenge, especially the final pitch competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=2028074&amp;HistoricalAwards=false\">NSF Rapid grant<\/a> on <strong>Disinfection and Reuse of Health-Care Worker Facial Masks to Prevent Infection coronavirus disease<\/strong> (PIs: Westerhoff, Herckes) provided early ability for her team to evaluate removal efficiency of aerosolized particles in the size range of SARS-covid2 virus.
