{"id":2236,"date":"2021-11-17T14:40:23","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T21:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/faculty.engineering.asu.edu\/westerhoff\/?p=2236"},"modified":"2021-11-17T14:40:23","modified_gmt":"2021-11-17T21:40:23","slug":"seeking-diverse-and-talented-phds-post-doc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/faculty.engineering.asu.edu\/westerhoff\/2021\/11\/seeking-diverse-and-talented-phds-post-doc\/","title":{"rendered":"Seeking diverse and talented PhDs &amp; Post-doc"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m looking for 1 or 2 new PhD students to join my group in summer\/fall 2022 to work on environmental chemistry analytics as applied to nanotechnology and\/or organic phosphorus as part of multiple Centers my group is part of: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newtcenter.org\/\">NSF \/ ERC for Nanotechnology Enabled Water Treatment (NEWT<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/steps-center.org\/\">NSF\/ STC Science and TEchnologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/memcare.sph.harvard.edu\/about\">NIEHS Superfund Metals and Metal Mixtures: Cognitive Aging, Remediation and Exposure Sources (MEMCARE)<\/a>.  Specifically I am looking for PhD or Post-doc to work on these projects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Characterizing the complex structure of organic phosphorus in water and sewage solids, and how these transform over time and upon different treatments.<\/li><li>Quantifying nanomaterials in environmental and engineered systems, from the perspective of nanomaterial sustainability, lifecycle analysis, techno-economic analysis and strategies to move from platinum group and REEs towards more earth abundant elements for catalysis and electrified water treatment systems.<\/li><li>Working on point of use water treatment technologies and system performance\/adoption in low resourced communities within the united states, including <em>colonias<\/em> and rural mining communities.<\/li><li>Developing new technologies for water and air treatment using optical fiber technologies.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ability to speak Spanish is highly desired for any of these positions, and may be essential for the third project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our research group is diverse and inclusive, and I am seeking team members who see the benefits of working hard and collaboratively in such environments. As part of the Centers, all team members will need to have a passion for outreach to K-12, undergraduates, companies and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am very interested in team members with an interest in developing intellectual property and helping to start new companies based upon research we develop in our group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PhD students <a href=\"https:\/\/admission.asu.edu\/graduate\/apply\">should apply to the Environmental Program<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssebe.engineering.asu.edu\/\">School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asu.edu\/\">Arizona State University<\/a> (Tempe, AZ).
