Dr. Xin Xu is an assistant professor in The Polytechnic School at Arizona State University. He is also a member of the graduate faculty in both the System Engineering Program within the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks, and the Materials Science and Engineering Program within the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport, and Energy at ASU.

He completed his B.S. in Physics from Nanjing University in 2014, and his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Northwestern University with Prof. Sossina Haile in 2019. From 2015 to 2019, he received transmission electron microscopy training at Argonne National Laboratory with Dr. Charudatta Phatak and Dr. Amanda Petford-Long. His doctoral work focused on developing local multimodal methods to understand the charge transport mechanism at grain boundaries in electroceramics. In 2019, he joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University as a postdoctoral scholar with Prof. William Chueh to study failure mechanisms in solid-state batteries through operando dynamic approaches. His research interests focus on developing a fundamental understanding of charge transport and the related electro-chemo-mechanics in mixed electronic and ionic materials to address energy and environmental challenges.

Graduate Students

Ph.D. Student (Safety Officer)

System Engineering

Xukun joined the group as a Ph.D. Student in Fall 2024. He gained his bachelor’s degree in environmental science in North China Electric Power University. He finished his master degree in Material Science and Engineering at National University of Singapore, where he learned the fabrication and characterization of nanomaterials.

Ph.D. Student (Lab Manager)

Materials Science and Engineering

Cauê joined the group as a Ph.D. student in Fall 2024. He completed his Master’s in Physics at Federal Fluminense University in Brazil, where he specialized in the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials, such as silver nanoparticle thin films and hydrogenated carbon nanoparticles. He loves taking photos and prototyping.
