Prof. Xin Xu

[email protected]

Dr. Xin Xu is an assistant professor in The Polytechnic School at Arizona State University. He is also a member of the graduate faculty in System Engineering at the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks, and Materials Science and Engineering at the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport, and Energy.

He completed his B.S. in Physics from Nanjing University in 2014, and his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Northwestern University with Prof. Sossina Haile in 2019. From 2015 to 2019, he received transmission electron microscopy training at Argonne National Laboratory with Dr. Charudatta Phatak and Dr. Amanda Petford-Long. His doctoral work focused on developing local multimodal methods to understand the charge transport mechanism at grain boundaries in electroceramics. In 2019, he joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University as a postdoctoral scholar with Prof. William Chueh to study failure mechanisms in solid-state batteries through operando dynamic approaches. His research interests focus on developing a fundamental understanding of charge transport and the related electro-chemo-mechanics in mixed electronic and ionic materials to address energy and environmental challenges.

Graduate Students

Ph.D. Student (Safety Officer)

System Engineering

Xukun joined the group as a Ph.D. Student in Fall 2024. He gained his bachelor’s degree in environmental science in North China Electric Power University. He finished his master degree in Material Science and Engineering at National University of Singapore, where he learned the fabrication and characterization of nanomaterials.

Ph.D. Student (Lab Manager)

Materials Science and Engineering

Cauê joined the group as a Ph.D. student in Fall 2024. He completed his Master’s in Physics at Federal Fluminense University in Brazil, where he specialized in the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials, such as silver nanoparticle thin films and hydrogenated carbon nanoparticles. He loves taking photos and prototyping.

Ph.D. Student

Materials Science and Engineering

Qiwen joined the group as a Ph.D. student in Spring 2026. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where she focused on the application of inorganic solid-state electrolytes, especially garnet-type materials. Her research interests include solid-state batteries, interfacial phenomena and related intelligent data analytics.

Undergraduate Students

FURI Undergraduate Fellow

Barrett, The Honors College

Lia joined the group in Spring 2025. She is currently a junior seeking her bachelor’s degree in Engineering(Robotics) and is part of Barrett, The Honors College. She enjoys learning about the functioning of devices and materials that run our world and can improve it. She will be working on anode impurity testing for solid-state batteries.

FURI Undergraduate Fellow

Manufacturing Engineering

Matthew joined the group in Fall 2025. He is currently a junior studying Manufacturing Engineering at ASU. Matthew enjoys problem solving, working with his hands, and finding ways to improve products and processes. He is working on a new glove box design that incorporates an ultrafast high-temperature sintering system to support in new materials synthesis.

Undergraduate Researcher

Mechanical Systems Engineering

Ty joined the group in Fall 2025. He is an undergraduate majoring in Mechanical Systems Engineering. He has a passion for iteration, design, and assembly, and has prior experience designing and manufacturing competition robots. He has also worked in an outreach program building wheelchairs from Power Wheels vehicles for young children with mobility disabilities. He hopes to prepare himself for a future career by gaining real-world experience through hands-on learning and projects. He is ready and willing to help achieve group goals and learn as much as he can.

FURI Undergraduate Fellow

Barrett, The Honors College

Keegan joined the group in Fall 2024. He is currently a sophomore in Mechanical Systems Engineering at ASU. Keegan enjoys hands-on projects and has experience in material composition and construction from his time volunteering at Studio3. He will be working on designing new air-free transfer vessels for solid-state batteries.

FURI Undergraduate Fellow

Barrett, The Honors College

Brendan joined the group in Fall 2024. He is currently seeking his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering Systems and is a part of Barrett, The Honors College. He enjoys 3D printing using CAD. He will be working on developing new testing cells for solid-state batteries.

Visiting Scholars

Victória Almeida

Visiting Scholar

Department of Physics

Victória is currently a master’s student in Physics at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), Brazil, where she works on the fabrication and characterization of thin-film battery electrodes. She is visiting the group from January to February 2026 as part of her M.Sc. research.

High School Students

Yishan Gao

High School Junior

Seton Catholic Preparatory

Yishan is a high school junior at Seton Catholic Preparatory who joined the group in Spring 2025. She has been an active member of her school’s Robotics Club since her freshman year, and the team have just made State for the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition. Her passion for robotics has been a major influence in her decision to pursue engineering as a college major. Within the group, Yishan will serve as the high school liaison and lead our outreach initiatives.
