Near real-time barge traffic monitoring platform

To help mitigate the inland waterway supply chain disruptions due to seasonal low flows and droughts, Barge SWIFT (Satellite Waterway Imaging for Freight Tracking) leverages commercial CubeSat constellation to monitor the barge traffic on the Mississippi River system. We developed a high throughput computing workflow to seamlessly acquire, process and disseminate information analytics.
Barge SWIFT provides Data as a service (DaaS) and Application Platform as a Service (aPaaS) for agricultural supply chain stakeholders including agricultural insurance/re-insurance companies and grain commodities traders.
Urban Stormwater Detention/Retention Pond Detection
Stormwater detention/retention ponds are important information for urban flood risk mitigation. However, city-wide information is not available. We developed a geometric flow method to identify stormwater detention ponds from sub-meter resolution LiDAR terrain data, including the location, area, depth and volume of the detention ponds. In Pheonix Metro area, there are over 12000 of these ponds.
The information will help hydrodynamic simulations in complex urban built environments and enhance public health (such as early warning of water-borne disease).
