Research

The Weiss lab pursues algal-based solutions using biophysical methods of research to drive the forefront of innovation within the Algae-Food/Energy/Water/Security Nexus. This results in the formation of many interdisciplinary projects which further renewable bioproduct innovation, promote sustainable agriculture, benefit human health, and improve the environment. Current and recently funded research projects and collaborations include:

  • Enhancing algal carbon capture
  • Evaluating promising strains for algal biofuels
  • Investigating algal crash-risk management and avoidance strategies
  • Implementing novel sensors for algal applications, for both commercial and environmental monitoring
  • Algal applications for wastewater remediation

The Weiss lab also supports numerous interdisciplinary projects by other ASU researchers, collaborating companies, and student projects. These areas include:

  • Novel carbon capture technologies
  • Low-emissions construction materials
  • Innovations in food and plastic waste management
  • Vertical and hydroponic farming
  • Green resource and land development practices
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and autonomous drones
