Bio

Dr. Shaopeng Wang is an associate professor in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering and the Biodesign Center for Bioelectronics and Biosensors at Arizona State University. He also serves as associate director of the center and as an associate professor and course director in the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering.

Dr. Wang develops biosensors and bioanalytical instrumentation for biomedical research, biomarker discovery, drug discovery, and disease diagnosis. His research focuses on label-free optical and electrochemical methods for detecting chemical and biological targets and measuring molecular interactions and cellular dynamics. Current projects include plasmonic and optical functional imaging of single proteins and living cells; charge-based detection of small molecules and single proteins; image-based bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing; and digital immunoassays for blood biomarkers.

Dr. Wang earned his BS in biological sciences and biotechnology and MS in biophysics from Tsinghua University, followed by a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Miami. He completed postdoctoral training in physics at Florida International University in Dr. Nongjian Tao’s laboratory and worked as a senior research scientist at ICx Nomadics, Inc. (now part of FLIR). He joined ASU in 2008 as an associate research professor and was promoted to research professor in 2015. He joined the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering as an associate professor in 2021 and received tenure in 2024.

He is a graduate faculty member endorsed to chair doctoral committees in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biological Design, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics.

Dr. Wang has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed journal publications and is an inventor on 15 issued patents, with more than 30 patent applications. His Google Scholar profile provides his current publication and citation record.
