Four Student’s Papers Uploaded to the IEEE Xplore Site

Papers presented at the Institue of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Power and Energy Society General Meeting in July of 2021 have been uploaded to the IEEE Xplore website.  This includes three papers from four of the students working in Pal’s laboratory.

Behrouz Azimian‘s paper “Time Synchronized State Estimation for Incompletely Observed Distribution Systems Using Deep Learning Considering Realistic Measurement Noise“

John Patterson‘s paper “An Inductively Powered Line-Mounted Time-Synchronized Micro Point-on-Wave Recorder“

Demetra Salls and Jairo Ramírez Torres‘s paper “Statistical Characterization of Random Errors Present in Synchrophasor Measurements“

Graduated Students Transitioning to Industry [12/09/2021]

Fakhri Saadedeen defended his Master’s in Fall 2021.  Presenting “GPS Spoofing Attacks on Phasor Measurement Units”, his work proved the feasibility of GPS spoofing attacks and proposed a hardware-based countermeasure.  Now transitioning to the power industry and with the goal of aiding the generation of clean energy in the future, he now works as a full-time engineer at Palo Verde Generating Station. When asked about his experience at ASU, Freddie enthused “I cherish my time at ASU and especially my time with the Pal group as I not only learned and enhanced my understanding, I enjoyed my time as well.”

We are certain that his impact on the power industry will be lasting and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Jairo Ramírez Torres graduated from Barrett, the Honors College with his Bachelor’s degree.  Completing both his honor’s thesis “Assessing the Economic Impact on Counties in the United States to a Loss of Fossil Fuel Dependence for Energy Production” and his capstone project “Determining Optimal Location of BESS within the Grid”, he is excited to apply for a Master’s program to pursue a Master’s in Economics.  His time as a part of the Pal Lab at ASU has given him privileges not usually available for undergraduate students, including participating in a nationally-funded research initiative, presenting his own unique research at the international PES General Meeting 2021, and being chosen as an IEEE PES – Scholar for the 2021-2022 Academic year. He wanted to express his gratitude for the Pal lab, saying “The work that I did with Professor Pal was unprecedented.  Not every undergraduate graduate can say they presented at an international conference or worked on field-changing research, but with Professor Pal, I can say just that.  He encouraged me to apply as a PES – Scholar and without his support, I’m certain that my time at ASU would look quite different.”

His hard work and determination will take him far in any career path he traverses, and we wish him the greatest of tidings upon his graduation.
