REU: ENGagED Program

Mechanical Engineering, Third Year Undergraduate Student

The University of New Mexico

“After my undergraduate degree, my goals are to complete a Ph.D. program in aerospace engineering or biomedical engineering. I would like to pioneer space travel while researching ways to support life outside of Earth, combining engineering problem-solving and life sciences.” – Daisy

Summer project: This summer Daisy worked on two projects. She helped develop an activity for a Summer Achievement Academy for Migratory High School students focused on helping students translate a 2D model into 3D through a CAD software. She also learned how to build a dataset by conducting a systematic literature review answering the following research question, In what ways do Latinx students gain interest in pursuing engineering? This research question stemmed from the literature that documents how retention in engineering is not the reason we see few Latinx students represented in the field, rather recruitment is the main culprit.
